2 min read

Berhampur: In a recent case in Berhampur, Odisha, a consumer court has imposed a Rs 20,000 fine on the e-commerce giant Flipkart for abruptly cancelling a customer’s order. The court has directed Flipkart to provide this penalty amount to the aggrieved customer, Gandhi Behera. This legal victory came after a year-long battle for Gandhi.

The complaint originated when Gandhi spotted a pair of shoes on Flipkart, originally priced at Rs 4,999 but offered at a discounted price of Rs 975. Without hesitation, Gandhi placed an order for the shoes and eagerly awaited their delivery. To his dismay, he received notification the next day that his order had been cancelled by Flipkart. Despite his attempts to contact the company’s helpline and explain his situation, he received no assistance or understanding.

Frustrated and left with no recourse, Gandhi sought help from the National Consumer helpline, which advised him to file a complaint with the local consumer court. Following this advice, Gandhi approached the Ganjam District Consumer Court and submitted his complaint. His complaint accused Flipkart of using deceptive offers to entice customers, cancelling orders without consent, and causing mental distress.

After a thorough examination of the case, the district court ruled in favor of Gandhi’s rights as a consumer and imposed a Rs 20,000 penalty on Flipkart. In compliance with the court’s decision, Flipkart promptly issued a Rs 20,000 check to Gandhi.
