2 min read

The government, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority, is conducting tests to improve emergency communication during natural disasters in Odisha. On a recent occasion, many residents received an emergency alert on their phones with a distinctive buzzer-like sound. The message conveyed that it was a sample testing message sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. The purpose of these tests is to enhance the Pan-India Emergency Alert System to ensure public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies.

These tests, which are part of the Cell Broadcast Alert System, aim to provide real-time disaster alerts, including warnings for scenarios like tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, and lightning. The alerts are delivered in both Odia and English to reach a wider audience. The Deputy Director-General of Telecom, Bijay Bhusan Pandey, emphasized that there’s no need to panic as these tests are designed to help citizens evacuate from affected areas in case of a natural disaster.

The government is closely coordinating with major telecom service providers such as Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Idea to carry out these tests. These tests are not isolated incidents; they will be conducted from time to time in various regions across the country. The government’s goal is to use this system for disseminating vital emergency information, including severe weather warnings, public safety messages, evacuation notices, and other critical updates. Similar tests have been conducted on previous occasions in India as part of this initiative, demonstrating the commitment to better preparedness during natural disasters.
