Muslim couple beaten to death in UP’s Sitapur after son elopes with woman from another community

A middle-aged Muslim couple was allegedly beaten to death in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh Friday. The son of the deceased couple eloped with a girl from another community from the same village and the family members of the girl reportedly carried out the attack.

The police have arrested the girl’s brother, brother-in-law, and a family friend till now. A search is on to nab the parents of the girl. The five accused have been booked for rioting, murder, and assault. The police have extended protection to the interfaith couple and refused to divulge their location. The latter left the village a day before the parents of the man were attacked.

The police said the rivalry between the two families started after the adult son of the deceased couple eloped with the girl in 2020. The girl was a minor at the time and the man was booked for kidnapping, rape, and under sections of the Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. But the two eloped again after the girl turned 18 years old and, this time, she gave a statement in court that she had left with her partner on her own.
